Archbishop of York to visit Jamaica October 5 -12, 2007 - Commemorating Abolition Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
THE DIOCESE of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands is preparing to welcome a leading figure of the Church of England who will visit October 5-12 as its guest. He is the Most Revd. The Rt. Hon. Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, Primate of England.
His visit will be in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. It will also provide the opportunity for members of the Anglican Communication and the wider community to be introduced to Archbishop Sentamu who is widely acclaimed as a crusader for justice and equality, inspired by Christ's teachings.
A major feature of his itinerary here will be his participation as chief celebrant and preacher at a Diocesan-wide Eucharist to be held at the National Arena, Kingston on Sunday October 7.
Another event on the programme, which will be of special interest, is a Youth Gathering to which students of Anglican schools and youth groups will be specially invited. Other events being planned will include brief visits to the Regions of the Diocese for meetings with clergy and laity, calls on the Governor General, the prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition and a meeting with leaders of other denominations.
WHO IS ARCHBISHOP SENTAMU? Age 58, he was born in Uganda. He read Law at Makerere University, Kampala, the capital of Uganda and was appointed a High Court Judge at the age of 24. His insistence on judicial independence drew the disgavour of director Idi Amin, who at that time ruled over Uganda, forcing Sentamu to flee to the United Kingdom.
There, he changed his career path, leaving the law to train for sacred ministry. After studies, he was ordained a priest in 1979. There followed a rich and varied ministry as chaplin, parish priest and bishop, leading to his consecration as the Bishop of Stepney in the Diocese of London in 1996.
Along the way, Bishop Sentamu's outspokenness on issues of justice and his call for the Church to play a more active role in righting social wrongs, led to his being chosen to chair a number of important public commissions including the judical enquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, a young man of Jamaican immigrant parentage who was killed by a group of white youths.
Subsequently, John Sentamu was appointed Bishop of Birmingham and continued to be hailed for his outstanding stewardship and fearless proclamation of the Gospel.
In 2005, the Prime Minister of England announced his appointment to York as the 97 th Archbishop. Later that year, on November 30 (the Feast of St. Andrew), he was enthroned in a ceremony rich with cultural fusion. He himself played African drums during the service.
Wife to accompany him
He will be accompanied by his wife Margaret. They are the parents of a son and a daughter.
